Lacquer painting has a long history in China. Lacquer wares and artworks can be traced back to more than six thousand years ago in north China. Lacquer is a natural material in liquid form being collected from lacquer trees.
The art of applying lacquer as a surface treatment on wooden utensils such as bowl, vase, jewelry box and furniture is a sign of prestige among the rich and the famous of the time.
Although lacquer art is a very traditional handicraft in China, the skill of lacquer painting has evolved tremendously through the years. Especially in the mid twentieth century, a lot of modern techniques have been developed to make lacquer painting more manageable to young artists.
It was in 1984 at the China National Art Exhibition that lacquer painting was officially recognized as a kind of painting in China.
